Runway Trend: Sheer

(top to bottom left to right: Vera Wang, Vena Cava, Stella McCartney, Roberto Cavalli, Richard Chai, Ralph Lauren, Proenza Schouler, Proenza Schouler again, Luella Bartley, Givenchy, [2nd row] Ferragamo, Emanuel Ungaro, Doo.Ri, Costume National, Collette Dinnigan,Christopher Kane, Christian Lacroix, Calvin Klein, Bottega Veneta, Anna Sui, Alexander Wang, Alexander Wang again)

So, again, I don’t really expect anyone to get a truly good idea of what the dresses looked like from this massive collage, but it does give you a vague idea of how many designers showed sheer pieces or pieces with sheer elements.

It seems to me that every American fashion blogger I follow is currently (or at least for the last few seasons) worshipping Mr. Alexander Wang.  So with a dress like this:

AWang Sheer

in his Spring/Summer 2009 show, you had to know more sheer dresses were coming for fall.  Obviously sheer is nothing new, but I thought the style was consistent enough to be worth noting.

Dresses like Alexander Wang’s – both the Spring/Summer black dress and the Fall/Winter white dress (at bottom left) – and from other designers, like the Ferragamo, the Proenza Schouler, and the Stella McCartney appeared frequently.  An opaque torso, frequently a slim, body-con number with sheer shoulders and/or sleeves – it’s almost like layering.

  1. I’m really digging the bottom right white Alexander Wang – love the open shoulder!
