Two Strains

So I’m dealing with a split fashion personality.

There’s the adult, classy, put-together style, and there’s the hipster, boho, just-rolled-out-of-bed look and I love both of them.

So I’ll start with the classy.  Big trend is the skinny jeans tucked into boots.  (Like this: Michael Kors fall ’06 collection)

I see this everywhere, on everyone.  I still wonder how people get their jeans to be so smoothly tucked – but that’s beside the point.

Here’s another look.  Very simple pieces, understated colors, black.  From the Loeffler Randall fall 2009 lookbook.

The always lovely Rachel Bilson.  I don’t exactly think there’s anything special about the outfit, but she looks chic and classy.  Again, simple pieces, muted colors (except for the shoes, which are a nice addition) very nice.

And here’s Adeline_R – a Chictopia user.  Great simple look, nice sweater/jacket, t-shirt with a cute pattern, nice skinny jeans…  Nice jewelry too.

Chictopia user ClassyTrash in a nice layered look, a good mix of textures too.

Then there’s the hipster, disheveled look.  I guess I hesitate on this one because attitude is so important and I’m afraid of looking like I’m a fake (to be perfectly honest).  But regardless, I think these people look pretty cool.

Dree Hemingway, simple, but still cool.  The slouchy top(s) and the great skinny jeans.

Anyway, just wanted to share.

Runway trend: Strong Shoulders

from top – left to right: 3.1 Phillip Lim, Balmain, Alberta Feretti, Zac Posen, Richard Chai, Nina Ricci, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Luis Vuitton, Gucci, Fendi, Dries van Noten, Doo.Ri, Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg, Derek Lam, Costume National, Calvin Klein, Balmain- again, oops!)

So this is a huge collage, I know, I don’t actually expect anyone to be able to see every photo, it’s mostly to show the number of designers that showed the look…

I was born too late in the 80s to have really participated in them or to remember them, but from the pictures I’ve seen, I don’t want them to come back.  Unfortunately, the designers in the fashion world don’t share my opinion.  Just about every runway review I read on mentioned the 80s.

The strong shoulders here aren’t too bad.  Some of them, though remind me of the fins on an old Cadillac (see Balmain, Zac Posen).

Just so long as the linebacker shoulders stay in the 80s (or on the football field) I’m fine with this one.

Runway trend: Furry Sleeves?

furry-sleeves(from top to bottom, left to right: Undercover, Michael Kors, Giambattista Valli, Elie Saab, Dries van Noten, Doo.Ri, Alexander Wang, Givenchy, Giles Deacon)

So here’s one trend I’m not sure I really see taking off.  I understand fur coats, vests, trim, scarves, stoles etc, but I’m not sure I understand the allure of furry or feathery sleeves.

I think Michael Kors did it well (second from left on top).  On her it looks more like an accent and more lady-like, but on the others,  I can’t quite say the same.

I’m guessing this avant-garde look will stay in magazine editorials and may show up on some editors at runway shows, but I can’t see this look trickling down to the masses via Forever 21…
